There is a spate of laws enacted to deal with the situations of crime against women. Besides provisions being listed in the Indian Penal Code, the Criminal Procedure Code, and the Civil Procedure Code, certain specific laws are enacted to deal with the situation of crime against women, such as the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, the Protection of Women Against Domestic Violence Act, 2005, the Sexual Harassment of Women and Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 and so on. Yet, the incidences of crime are increasing. The solution lies in understanding how the legal system works and thinking of other measures beyond the law to make it more effective. This online training course aims to understand the different forms of violence that women face in homes and in public spaces, the available legal remedies, how these laws are enacted, the way the laws operate, and to think about other safety measures. The course will stimulate thinking about basic questions, such as how to ensure the safety of women? Why do we need separate laws to deal with crime against women? The constitution of India guarantees equality than why women are facing violence in homes and in public spaces? How and why are laws being made? What are the international law provisions to deal with VAW? What are the criminal law provisions and if deterrence has actually worked to eradicate violence? What are the civil remedies available to deal with VAW and how such remedies help victims and survivors of violence? Can we say that violence against women is eradicated after the laws are in operation for years? If not, why? What are the gaps that exists between the ground realities and the ways law exist on papers? What more can be done to ensure the safety of women? Can we think of remedies beyond law to ensure that women stay safe in homes and public spaces? Certainly, we cannot hold women and children responsible for their safety then who is responsible to ensure safety and wellbeing of women and children? For Whom Young professionals, students and common citizens interested in knowing basics about the situation relating to violence against women, how laws are made, the legal provisions and implementation of law.
