About
Economic policy sits at the intersection of quantitative analysis, political reality and societal welfare. Every budget, interest rate decision, trade agreement and welfare scheme rests on choices that affect growth, distribution and stability, yet most people who follow public policy have never had a plain introduction to how these choices are made.
This twelve-session introductory online certificate course, hosted by IMPRI’s Center for the Study of Finance and Economics, declutters core macroeconomic and microeconomic concepts, market structures, fiscal tools and institutional decision-making. It then applies them to the debates shaping India now: fiscal federalism and the 16th Finance Commission, industrial policy and the Production-Linked Incentive schemes, central banking and inflation, Digital Public Infrastructure and fintech, trade reconfigurations and the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, gig-economy labour welfare, agrarian distress, municipal finance, and the energy transition.
Each session pairs an academic economist with a practitioner, such as a former civil servant, a market economist, a journalist or a field organiser, so concepts are tested against implementation realities. Open to early-career professionals, civil society practitioners, researchers and students, the programme aims to move from concepts to evidence, and from evidence to a clear reading of policy.
Key Themes & Focus Areas
- Macroeconomic Foundations: The formal and informal economy, national accounts and GDP revisions, post-pandemic demand recovery and high-frequency indicators.
- Fiscal Policy and Federalism: Budgets, taxation, tax devolution, state debt, the 16th Finance Commission, and the shift in industrial policy through the Production-Linked Incentive schemes.
- Money, Banking and Digital Finance: Monetary policy, inflation targeting, banking health, and Digital Public Infrastructure and fintech policy.
- Trade and Geoeconomics: Logistics costs and connectivity, free trade agreements, supply chain resilience and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism.
