About the Course

This three-day online training programme intends to bring together professionals from academia, civic society, and the business and entrepreneurial sectors to begin a critical conversation about our times. The ultimate purpose of this programme is to develop a group of practioners for mainstreaming sustainable and affordable Rainwater Harvesting in Urban India.
The training programme aims to create a platform for professionals from various backgrounds and other experts to discuss information from multiple agencies and exchange experiences to help participants face their water management challenges and disseminate the knowledge gained to increase community awareness of Rainwater Harvesting Techniques and applications.

Background

In India, rainwater harvesting has been practiced for more than 4000 years. It is a simple process of accumulating and storing rainwater. Rainwater harvesting systems, since ancient times, have been applied as a supply for drinking water, water for irrigation, and water for livestock.

Rain is the first form of water we know in the hydrological cycle. Rivers, lakes and groundwater are all secondary sources of water. As Land pressure rises, cities are growing vertically, and in the countryside, more forest areas are encroached on and used for agriculture. Increasing urbanization leads to concentrated population density, resulting in a rough drawing of groundwater. This is ensuring in drought and drying up of river beds at places where domestic and industrial use of water is rising. The extensive and unplanned usage of groundwater disturbed the natural water table and has made the groundwater contaminated and, in many a place, totally unfit for any use—the groundwater in such areas requires to be immediately left to revive. Collecting rainwater and harvesting the storm water run-offs in such areas surely would minimize the risk of the future population.

The training programme aims to create a platform for professionals from various backgrounds and other experts to discuss information from multiple agencies and exchange experiences to help participants face their water management challenges and disseminate the knowledge gained to increase community awareness of Rainwater Harvesting Techniques and applications.
