#WebPolicyLearning - Women's Rights, Laws and Policies in India - speakers

Theme:

“Just as a bird can’t fly with one wing only, a nation cannot march forward if the women are left behind.”

Swami Vivekananda

The principle of gender equality is enshrined in the Indian Constitution in its Preamble, Fundamental Rights, Fundamental Duties and Directive Principles. It not only grants equality to women, but also empowers the State to adopt measures of positive discrimination in favour of women. Within the framework of a democratic polity, our laws, development policies, plans and programmes have aimed at women’s advancement in different spheres.

However, there still exists a wide gap between the goals enunciated in the Constitution, legislation, policies on the one hand and the situational reality of the status of women in India, on the other. For instance, crimes against women are constantly on the rise and the existing laws are not enough. Additionally, one of the major elements hampering women’s rights progress in India is the chronically low level of female political representation. India is emerging, however, the degree to which women and girls are hampered in their ability to fully participate in the society can prove detrimental to the country’s modernization.

Hence this timely 3-day course will provide the participants a nuanced perspective on women specific laws and policies in India, which need to be more inclusive and stringent. This program will focus on laws with respect to women’s health, marriage, inheritance, succession and property rights as well. This course will be conducted by various expert resource persons comprising academicians, advocates where women’s concerns and issues will specially be addressed and reflected vis-à-vis enforcement of rights, concerned laws, and sectoral policies.

For Whom: Everyone having a keen interest in legal literacy and women’s rights and empowerment: Lawyers, Undergraduate and post-graduate students, Researchers, Faculty, Journalists, Civil Society members, and Activists

Upon successful completion of the program, each participant will be awarded a Certificate of Completion.
