About the Course

The three-day online training program has a comprehensive course structure highlighting the Indian urban situation, infrastructural risk, disaster, sustainable housing, resilience and capacity building, adaptation and the related themes. The participation of different stakeholders will initiate an inclusive dialogue around the suggestions and best-practices to ensure sustainable housing and disaster resilient cities in India. 

The focus of this discourse is to provide a platform and channel to deliberate on the problems faced by affected communities, the increasing vulnerability of Indian cities, climate change, distribution of resources, effective budgeting and the multifold impact it has on the human society. By the end of the third day, we hope to lead actionable and innovative solutions aimed at a holistic development of the urban spaces for all residents. 

Background

Among the myriad of issues pertaining to developing countries, housing and disaster resilience remain significant due to its direct impact on lives. The rapid urbanization is followed by inevitable infrastructural which can be difficult to adapt by residents who are still deprived of the basic amenities of life. Housing is a social issue and thus can not be solved technically. There is a shortage of housing in India regardless of the socio-economic conditions, despite numerous housing programmes established by the Government. It’s not only the quantity but also the quality of housing that is imperative for a sustainable India. The resilience of Indian cities depend not just on the physical, social, political, economical, as well as emotional aspects. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic has foregrounded the crucial link between adequate housing, human settlements, and people’s ability to lead healthy lives. The lockdown-induced work-from-home scenario has also highlighted differential housing demand and usage.

The exponential depletion of natural resources and other man-made hazards is returning the favour with the global climate change. This negative effect directly targets the human life and increases the ever-shakiing vulnerability of the urban residents. Indian cities are vulnerable to disasters due to their location and diversity of geography. These disasters and urban complexity lead to an economic loss to the city, emotional trauma to those who lost their homes and family, social damage to the displaced and migrants and political unstability to governments. The need is to acknowledge this damage and spread awareness to all. The Indian cities need proper and strategic urban planning which targets the different groups of residents and take care of their housing needs. Urban resilience can further be enhanced by focussing on community disaster resilience at local levels and implementing nature-based solutions to protect, manage and restore the natural and modified ecosystems sustainably. 

Urbanisation and unplanned growth have led to complex social, economic, and ecological challenges that the urban areas need to address, along with catering to the current demand for essential infrastructure services and resource allocation towards better urban management.

The anticipated growth in urban population will require the construction of additional as well as re-construction of existing urban infrastructure and buildings, which will increase demand on land for habitation and other purposes. Managing the carbon footprint of urban habitats and ensuring their climate and disaster resilience is an important and challenging task for governments across countries, including India. To foster sustainable development, mainstreaming climate change mitigation and adaptation measures in urban planning and policy frameworks is critical. 

This three-day online training programme aims to bring together professionals from academia, civic society, and the commercial and entrepreneurial sectors to provide a solid interdisciplinary introduction to the fundamental concepts of urban housing, disasters, resilience and sustainability, as well as their interrelationships, perspectives, and variations, and how communities, policymakers, and the environment have linked them. It will explore possible approaches and policy recommendations for developing a resilient and sustainable urban infrastructure in which cities are not only resilient but also liveable for all of their residents.
