About the Talk- Gender Data Gaps in 21st Century New India:Issues and the Way Forward towards Gender Equality
India has implemented several laws, policies and programmes to promote gender equity in various spheres of life. While several indicators pertaining to women’s agency, literacy, health and economic status have undoubtedly improved over the years, several challenges persist. Deeply entrenched patriarchal mindsets, inequitable development as well as the sheer diversity of beliefs, customs and practices has made it difficult for India to truly achieve gender parity in all walks of life at the pace that would be desirable. Slow progress on gender equality, of course, greatly hampers the progress of society as a whole. This talk will explore some of the governance mechanisms that can be adopted by India to strengthen the implementation of existing gender-related legislation and policies as well as highlight additional measures which if introduced could help us accelerate our progress towards becoming a truly gender equal country.
