Liane Schalatek is the Associate Director of the Heinrich Böll Stiftung Washington, DC Office. The Heinrich Böll Stiftung is a German political party foundation, affiliated with the German Green Party, with 33 offices worldwide working on sustainable development, energy transition and climate change, democracy promotion, protecting civil society spaces as well as gender democracy. At the Heinrich Böll Stiftung, Liane spearheads the foundation’s work on climate finance. She has more than 20 years of experience in global governance issues, specifically in international development and finance and international climate negotiations, as well as the promotion of human rights, gender equality and women’s empowerment. A particular interest of her work has been awareness raising and capacity building on the need to engender macroeconomic and finance policy.
Currently, her work focuses on international climate finance, with an emphasis on public climate finance flows and on equitable access to climate funding and specifically the Green Climate Fund (GCF), a process she followed from its design process in 2011 onward through all GCF Board meetings. From 2016-2019, she served as Developed Country Civil Society Active Observer to the GCF. As an expert on gender and climate finance, she works on the gender dimension of climate financing instruments and operations, including in the GCF, other climate funds and the UNFCCC more broadly.
A journalist by training, she co-founded and co-leads the website ClimateFundsUpdate (www.climatefundsupdate.org), one of the primary civil society public climate finance tracking sites, as a joint project with the London-based Overseas Development Institute (ODI).
