About

End-of-life care remains a deeply complex and sensitive aspect of healthcare, situated at the intersection of law, ethics, medicine, and society. This panel discussion aims to examine India’s existing legal and policy framework governing end-of-life care, including patient rights, clinical decision-making, and consent. It will reflect on the ethical dilemmas faced by healthcare professionals, patients, and families in clinical practice and counseling, particularly in contexts of terminal illness and life-limiting conditions.

The discussion will also assess the availability, accessibility, and integration of palliative care services within India’s health system, highlighting gaps in infrastructure, trained personnel, and awareness. Recognising that end-of-life decisions are not made in isolation, the panel will explore the socio-cultural, economic, and family dynamics that influence choices around care, dignity, and wellbeing. Drawing from policy, practice, and lived experiences, the session seeks to identify actionable policy and programmatic interventions to improve the quality, affordability, and reach of palliative care, while fostering informed, compassionate, and rights-based approaches to end-of-life care in India.

Objectives

  • To examine the current legal and policy framework governing end-of-life care in India.
  • To reflect on ethical dilemmas and decision-making processes in clinical practice and counseling.
  • To assess the availability and integration of palliative care within India’s health system.
  • To understand the social determinants—socio-cultural, economic, and family dynamics that influence end-of-life decisions.
  • To identify policy and programmatic interventions for improving accessibility, affordability, quality of care, and awareness around palliative care and wellbeing.
