Overview

The International Day of Women in Diplomacy, observed on June 24 as proclaimed by the UNGA in its 76th session, celebrates the vital contributions of women to the field of diplomacy while emphasizing the need for gender equality in this domain. This day serves as an occasion to honor the accomplishments of women diplomats, recognize their perseverance in overcoming systemic obstacles, and advocate for a more inclusive and equitable diplomatic sphere.

Since 2014, 16 countries have adopted or pledged to adopt Feminist Foreign Policies (FFPs). However, many of these policies have faced criticism for adopting superficial “feminism-lite” approaches—focusing on aid or symbolic inclusion rather than addressing deeper issues of intersectionality, peacebuilding, and justice. Meanwhile, women and non-binary individuals in the Global South have been advancing feminist values for generations through their fight against colonialism, advocacy for food sovereignty, inclusive legislative efforts, and the use of international law to safeguard rights. It is imperative that this rich legacy of feminist praxis in the majority world be placed at the forefront of shaping truly transformative FFPs.

This program aims to bridge these gaps by exploring the theory and practice of feminist foreign policies in depth. It offers an opportunity to critically examine what feminist or pro-gender diplomacy entails and how these approaches differ from conventional foreign policy frameworks. Through comprehensive discussions on the building blocks of feminist foreign policies, real-world examples from the majority world, and emerging global practices, the event fosters meaningful dialogue and reflection.

The platform will serve as a space to analyze the motivations, implementation, and implications of feminist diplomacy. By addressing questions about its conceptualization and practical application, the program seeks to inspire transformative ideas and policy interventions, equipping participants to reimagine diplomacy as a tool for equity, justice, and global inclusion.
