About the #WebPolicyTalk: Social Sector Policy for Cohesive Development
Social sector policy assumes critical importance in the post-covid era. There has been much debate in the literature on the post-covid response of governments with a focus on sectoral and scheme-specific analysis. Now is an opportune time to also reflect on the overall approach, purpose and framework that governs social sector policy across countries as the gains in human development made over the past two decades are in the danger of being eroded.
This lecture focuses on the core aspects of defining social sectors, examining the various approaches to social sector policy, analyzing the relationship between economic growth and social sector attainments, and the factors that contribute to successful social sector policy for cohesive development. The main features of India’s recent social sector policy measures are discussed in the light of the challenges posed by the huge magnitude of people requiring enhancement in capabilities, securing sustainable financing and ensuring commitment to the foundational values of ‘Leave no one behind’ and ‘Reaching the farthest first’ embedded in the Sustainable Development Goals agenda 2030.
