The State of Development Discourses – #CohesiveDevelopment

Intellectuals, undoubtedly, have an important role to play in demystifying development, halting false narratives, and presenting and amplifying a varied cross-section of perspectives, towards building a space for comprehensive, holistic, and robust discourses. Development discourses ought to be looked at through the twin lens of relevance and usefulness. For this, intellectual discussions – in which thought and understanding are put to the test – and subsequent intellectual development, are the way forward. Further, value addition to the existing body of knowledge and ideas is of paramount importance. With a persistent information overload and rapid transfer of knowledge in the current times, veracity and completeness often take a backseat.

Thus, creating and strengthening spaces for open, inclusive, and rigorous discourse must be emphasised, especially amid the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis, with the aim of moving towards informed and sensitive policymaking, planning, and impact. With this background, IMPRI, New Delhi, along with Centre for Development Communication and Studies (CDECS), Jaipur, has launched a discussion series called The State of Development Discourses – #CohesiveDevelopment where Prof Sunil Ray, who has done pioneering work in this field, interacts with leading development theory and practitioner experts to demystify discourses for larger positive impact and contribution to policy and implementation.

The outcome of the deliberations would be disseminated through various social media platforms and media outlets and would contribute to the preparation of a policy brief that will help in the future course of actions for policymakers, practitioners, researchers, and civil society organizations.
