About
Organized by the IMPRI Gender Impact Studies Center (GISC) on the occasion of Human Rights Day, this online panel discussion reaffirms a core principle of global justice: women’s rights are inseparable from human rights. The session brings together experts, scholars, and practitioners to examine how this foundational idea continues to shape contemporary struggles for gender equality, dignity, and freedom.
Despite decades of activism and legal progress, women across the world—and particularly in India—continue to experience systemic discrimination, violence, and exclusion from social, economic, and political spheres. The discussion explores the historical evolution of women’s human rights, the gaps that persist within legal and institutional frameworks, and the urgent need to strengthen accountability and implementation.
By centering lived experiences alongside policy perspectives, the session aims to deepen public understanding of the intersectional challenges women face. It encourages participants to reflect on pathways for advancing rights-based approaches, fostering meaningful empowerment, and building a future where equality and justice are genuinely universal.
Objectives
- To reaffirm the principle that women’s rights are an integral and inseparable part of universal human rights, grounded in global and national legal frameworks.
- To examine the persistent structural, social, and institutional barriers that hinder the realization of women’s rights in India and globally.
- To highlight the lived experiences, challenges, and resilience of women across diverse contexts, emphasizing intersectional perspectives.
- To identify policy pathways, community strategies, and rights-based approaches that can strengthen gender equality, justice, and protection of women’s human rights.
