In light of the recent Marriage Equality judgement in the Supreme Court that denied same-sex couples the right to marry, it is important to equip ourselves with the right analytical tools and frameworks to grasp the complexities of LGBTQ+ issues in India. Considering India’s diverse demographics, we must understand how queer identities co-exist with caste, class, race, and religious identities. Despite some progress on the legal front with the striking down of Section 377, and the Right to Privacy guaranteeing freedom of sexual orientation in 2017, the queer community still faces rampant discrimination, homophobia, transphobia, and violence, from their natal families, civil society and the State. Constructing an inclusive contemporary politics that is able to situate the LGBTQ+ movement within the Indian context, navigate the overlapping identities of caste, class, and religion, and envision a future of acceptance, recognition, and respect is a pressing need.
After a successful first cohort, IMPRI is organizing the second cohort of Beyond Binaries: Understanding Sexual Identities and Queer Rights in India. During this course, the participants will be able to gain a deeper understanding of gender identities, sexuality, queer rights, and the queer movement for liberation in India.
The course will be conducted by subject matter experts who can bridge the gap between theory and practice — legal practitioners, civil society activists, human rights experts, professionals, and members of the academic fraternity. The pedagogy will consist of a lecture series and interactive sessions where the participants interact and share their ideas with the panelists. We hope to facilitate a safe space for critical thinking, engaging with the topics at hand, and learning from each other.
This course is suitable for anybody interested in Gender Studies, Queer Studies, and Legal Studies. Working professionals, lawyers, civil society members, health workers, activists, researchers, post-graduate and undergraduate students, and anybody else interested are all welcome to register.
Benefits of this Course:
• Learn from globally and nationally renowned thematic experts and practitioners
