About
‘I am what I am, so take me as I am’.
— Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
In light of the recent Marriage Equality judgement in the Supreme Court that denied same-sex couples the right to marry, it is important to equip ourselves with the right analytical tools and frameworks to grasp the complexities of LGBTQIA+ issues in India. A historical overview of the LGBTQIA+ community in India and their journey of trials and tribulations through the long legal battles coupled with the prevailing sociocultural stigma needs to be examined to understand the role of the state and its responses in terms of public policy towards sexual minorities. This One-Month Immersive Online Certificate Training Course will be a potent tool for engagement, persuasion, coalition-building, and perception shaping within LGBTQIA+ rights and equality. It will render complex issues pertinent to the community comprehensible and relatable, facilitating engagement among policymakers and the broader public. An instrument in building coalitions among diverse stakeholders, uniting queer individuals, allies, and advocacy groups behind a common cause, shared narratives of resilience, identity, and belonging foster solidarity and amplify collective voices in policy advocacy efforts. Additionally, shapes perceptions of LGBTQ+ issues, influencing public opinion, media discourse, and policy debates. The horizons of the course will extend to include health disparities and exacerbating global inequalities in this domain. Questions of inclusivity and legalisation will be addressed in recognition of their rights.
Therefore, building on the success of the first cohort of Beyond Binaries: Understanding Sexual Identities and Queer Rights in India, this course, by centring diverse queer narratives, mobilises policymakers to challenge stereotypes, dismantle stigmas, and promote greater social acceptance and inclusion. Thus, it legitimises queer-inclusive policies by providing compelling justifications rooted in equality, dignity, and justice principles.
Apart from being a lecture series, the course will provide a safe space where consent is at its core. It will include film discussions and interactive sessions where participants can interact openly with the panelists and each other. This course will be conducted by expert resource persons comprising legal practitioners, civil society activists, professionals, and academics. In all its attempts to emerge as a global power, it is high time India sets an example on the international stage of the value of building a positive, discrimination-free, and safe space for the LGBTQ+ community.
