Overview
The International Day of Women in Diplomacy, observed annually on June 24 and proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly, recognises the important contributions of women to diplomacy, peacebuilding, and global governance. It also draws attention to the persistent barriers that continue to limit equal participation in international decision-making. In a period marked by armed conflicts, democratic backsliding, economic uncertainty, and climate emergencies, inclusive and gender-responsive diplomacy remains essential.
At the same time, actors working in the feminist foreign policy space are facing mounting challenges. These include shrinking civic spaces, backlash against gender equality agendas, securitised state priorities, underrepresentation in leadership, funding constraints for feminist organisations, and the gap between policy commitments and implementation. In many contexts, feminist values are invoked rhetorically while traditional hierarchies and unequal power structures remain unchanged. Practitioners, diplomats, scholars, and activists must therefore navigate both institutional resistance and rapidly shifting geopolitical realities.
This year’s program, themed Current Challenges for Actors in the Feminist Foreign Policy Space, will critically examine these evolving tensions through global and majority world perspectives. Through expert discussions, case studies, and policy dialogue, participants will explore how feminist approaches can respond to challenges in peacebuilding, climate negotiations, migration, trade, and multilateral governance. The programme aims to generate practical insights for strengthening diplomacy rooted in equity, justice, and meaningful international cooperation.
For Whom
The program will be beneficial for international relations academicians, scholars, and students; diplomats, diplomatic organizations, and institutions; journalists, media personnel; early career professionals and anyone interested in feminism, global politics, and the intersection of the two.
