Background

The Accelerated e-Mobility Revolution for India’s Transportation (e-AMRIT) initiative was launched on 10 November 2021 by NITI Aayog in collaboration with the Government of the United Kingdom during the COP26 Summit in Glasgow. The initiative was developed under the UK-India Joint Roadmap 2030 and was conceived as a comprehensive digital platform to support India’s transition towards electric mobility.

The collaboration with the United Kingdom was significant as it brought technical expertise, policy experience, and international best practices in clean transportation and low-carbon mobility, while also strengthening cooperation between the two countries on climate action and sustainable development goals. The portal was designed as a “one-stop destination” providing information related to electric vehicles (EVs), subsidies, investment opportunities, charging infrastructure, and policies.

India’s transport sector is heavily dependent on fossil fuels and contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions and urban air pollution. Despite various policy interventions such as the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP), FAME-I, and FAME-II, EV adoption faced barriers arising from inadequate consumer awareness, misinformation regarding battery technology, concerns about charging infrastructure, and limited understanding of government incentives.

NITI Aayog recognised that the transition to electric mobility required not only financial incentives and manufacturing support but also a robust information ecosystem. Consequently, e-AMRIT was launched to bridge information gaps by providing reliable, accessible, and consolidated information on electric mobility. The portal seeks to simplify decision-making for consumers, investors, businesses, researchers, and policymakers by aggregating information scattered across multiple government agencies and departments. 

Objectives

The e-AMRIT portal was launched with the objective of promoting awareness regarding electric mobility and providing a reliable source of information on electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, government incentives, financing options, and investment opportunities. By addressing information asymmetries in the EV ecosystem, the platform seeks to support consumers, businesses, investors, and policymakers in making informed decisions regarding sustainable transportation.

Target Beneficiaries

The e-AMRIT portal was designed to serve a diverse set of stakeholders involved in India’s emerging electric mobility ecosystem. Its primary beneficiaries include prospective electric vehicle buyers seeking information on vehicle technologies, charging infrastructure, incentives, financing options, and operating costs.

For example, consumers can compare EV benefits, understand charging requirements, and explore available subsidies before making purchase decisions. The platform also caters to manufacturers, investors, charging infrastructure providers, researchers, and policymakers. Investors can use the portal to understand market trends, growth opportunities, and government incentives, while manufacturers and charging infrastructure providers can access information on policies, regulations, and industry developments. Researchers can utilize policy documents and market information for analysis, whereas policymakers can refer to consolidated resources to support evidence-based decision-making. By addressing the information requirements of multiple stakeholders through a single platform, e-AMRIT seeks to facilitate informed decision-making and support the wider adoption of electric mobility in India.

 Key Provisions

The portal provides comprehensive information on various categories of electric vehicles, available charging technologies, state and central government incentives, financing and insurance options, investment opportunities, and policy developments. It also includes tools that enable users to compare costs and understand the environmental and economic benefits associated with EV adoption.

Functioning

Unlike conventional government schemes that provide direct subsidies or financial assistance, e-AMRIT functions as a knowledge and awareness platform. Developed and hosted by NITI Aayog in collaboration with the UK Government, it integrates information from multiple government departments and presents it in a user-friendly format. 

The portal assists consumers in understanding the transition from internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles by providing information regarding ownership costs, charging requirements, battery technologies, and available incentives. It also includes tools that enable users to estimate potential savings from switching to EVs. 

For businesses and investors, the portal highlights investment opportunities in vehicle manufacturing, battery production, charging infrastructure,and ancillary services. The platform also serves as a repository of policy documents and market information, thereby supporting evidence-based decision-making. 

Performance

As an awareness and information platform, e-AMRIT’s performance is reflected in its ability to improve access to reliable information on electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, government incentives, EV policies, and market developments. Launched in 2021 by NITI Aayog in collaboration with the UK Government, the portal was developed as a one-stop source of information on electric mobility in India. 

According to information published on the official e-AMRIT portal during its initial phase (2021–22), India’s EV ecosystem included approximately 7.96 lakh registered electric vehicles, more than 25 states with notified or draft EV policies, around 380 EV manufacturers, and nearly 1,800 public charging stations. The portal also highlighted a 133 percent growth in EV sales between FY2015 and FY2020 and the contribution of FAME-I and FAME-II towards reducing carbon emissions. 

During 2024–2026, e-AMRIT continued to function as a centralized repository of information on EV technologies, charging infrastructure, government incentives, financing options, and policy developments. While publicly available official sources do not provide updated performance statistics for the portal during this period, its continued operation and regular dissemination of EV-related information demonstrate its ongoing relevance in supporting awareness and informed decision-making within India’s electric mobility ecosystem.

      Impact

  1. Consumer Awareness One of the most significant contributions of e-AMRIT has been the creation of a centralised knowledge repository for electric mobility. The portal addresses common concerns relating to charging infrastructure, financing, insurance, subsidies, and battery technologies. By simplifying access to information, it helps consumers make informed decisions regarding EV adoption. 
  1. Investment Promotion The portal supports investment promotion by providing information on business opportunities within the EV value chain. It serves as an interface connecting policy frameworks with potential investors and entrepreneurs. The platform’s focus on manufacturing, charging infrastructure, and ancillary services aligns with India’s broader objective of developing a domestic EV ecosystem.
  1. Environmental Sustainability:  As an information and awareness platform, e-AMRIT supports the adoption of electric mobility by providing reliable information on electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, incentives, and policies. In doing so, it complements broader EV initiatives such as FAME and PLI, which contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving urban air quality.
  1. Policy Coordination The portal serves as a mechanism for policy coordination by bringing together information from central and state governments. This contributes to greater transparency and facilitates stakeholder engagement in India’s evolving EV ecosystem. 

Emerging Issues

Despite its contributions, several challenges remain

First, awareness gaps continue to persist in rural and semi-urban areas where digital access may be limited. Since e-AMRIT is primarily a web-based platform, its outreach may not fully extend to populations with lower internet penetration.

          Second, the effectiveness of the portal is linked to the availability of updated information.  Given the rapidly evolving nature of EV technologies, incentives, and regulations, maintaining real-time data remains a continuous challenge.

         Third, charging infrastructure remains unevenly distributed across regions. While the portal provides information on charging stations, actual infrastructure availability continues to vary significantly across states.

         Fourth, differences among state EV policies can create complexities for consumers and businesses seeking uniform information regarding incentives and regulatory requirements.

Way Forward

To enhance the effectiveness of e-AMRIT, several measures may be considered.

  1. Strengthening integration with real-time EV registration and charging infrastructure databases.
  2. Expanding multilingual content to improve accessibility across India’s linguistic diversity.
  3. Increasing awareness campaigns through educational institutions, local governments, and civil society organisations.
  4. Enhancing interactive tools related to cost-benefit analysis and charging infrastructure mapping.
  5. Strengthening collaboration with state governments to ensure timely updates of policy information.
  6. Integrating emerging areas such as battery recycling, circular economy practices, and sustainable supply chains into the portal’s knowledge framework.

These measures can further strengthen e-AMRIT’s role as a critical component of India’s electric mobility transition.
