Mizoram, in northeast India, borders Myanmar, Bangladesh, and the Indian states of Assam, Manipur and Tripura, and is known for its scenic hills and rich culture. Aizawl is both its capital and largest city. The state spans 21,081 sq km and has a population of 10,97,206 as per Census 2011 (Office of the Registrar General & Census Commissioner, India, 2011), making it the second least populated state in India after Sikkim. Its projected population was about 1.2 million in 2022-23, around 0.09% of India’s total, mostly from various Mizo tribes (NITI Aayog, 2025; National Commission on Population, 2020). Mizoram has 11 districts. The most populous are Aizawl, Lunglei, Champhai and Lawngtlai, and Aizawl is the most densely populated.
As per the India State of Forest Report 2021 released by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, forests cover 84.53% of Mizoram’s area, the highest share of any state in India. Tribal traditions shape daily life, celebrated through festivals like Chapchar Kut, Mim Kut, and Pawl Kut. Mizo is the official language, and most residents are Christian. The tropic of cancer runs through the state nearly at its middle. The maximum north–south distance is 285 km, while maximum east–west stretch is 115 km.
Mizoram is a democracy with a single-house legislature, the Mizoram Legislative Assembly. It has 40 members, elected every five years. The Chief Minister heads the government, and the state falls under the Gauhati High Court. Most people depend on farming, and the state is working to grow tourism, handloom, and handicrafts. Though the hilly land makes building hard, Mizoram has made good progress on infrastructure, with a focus on steady, sustainable growth.

As per PRS India Analysis, Chief Minister Lalduhoma also holds the finance portfolio, presenting the budget on February 26, 2026, net spending is Rs 16,684 crore: Rs 14,094 crore revenue and Rs 2,588 crore capital. Top sectors are education, rural development, energy, agriculture and health. Receipts of Rs 15,015 crore (82% of revenue from the Centre) and Rs 2,062 crore borrowing fund it. Fiscal deficit is 3.8% of GSDP, with a 2.1% revenue surplus. GSDP is projected at Rs 43,817 crore, 11% higher than previous year.
The Mizoram government has 46 departments, Its flagship programme is the Mizoram Bana Kaih (Handholding) Scheme, run by the Planning & Programme Implementation Department with a budget outlay of Rs 350 crore for 2026-27, up from Rs 200 crore in 2024-25, and Rs 150 crore of that is for buying key crops from farmers.
The five main focus schemes in the 2026-27 budget are Bana Kaih (Rs 350 crore), road maintenance (Rs 183.25 crore), the Mizoram Universal Health Care Scheme (Rs 130 crore), State Priority Projects (Rs 100 crore) and the MLA Local Area Development Fund (Rs 80 crore). Conclusion
Mizoram’s 2026-27 budget sets out a clear path to a self-reliant state. The Bana Kaih scheme (Rs 350 Cr) helps farmers, entrepreneurs and young people build lasting livelihoods. The Mizoram Universal Healthcare Scheme offers enrolled beneficiaries (government employees, civil pensioners, AB PM-JAY cardholders, and members of the public who register and pay the annual family contribution of Rs 2,500) cashless healthcare coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh. . New hydro and solar power projects, a modern cancer centre, better roads and growing tourism will lay strong foundations for the years ahead. With these steps, Mizoram is working towards its Vision 2047 goal of contributing 1% of India’s GDP and becoming a proud partner in Viksit Bharat.
