The Evolving Concerns in India’s Relationship with Bhutan

The new phase of cordial diplomatic relations between Bhutan and China call for the establishment of fresh redlines between India and its Himalayan neighbour.

In October, Tandi Dorji became Bhutan’s first foreign minister to visit China. Dr Dorji’s visit has garnered significant attention across the world for two reasons: First, by concluding the 25th round of border negotiations, Bhutan and China are drawing close to ending the decades-old territorial dispute. During this visit, both countries even signed a “cooperation agreement” that outlines the responsibilities and functions of a joint technical team (JTT) tasked with delimiting and demarcating the disputed boundaries.

India’s Potential to Foster a Resolution in the Israel-Palestine Conflict

The October 7 attacks by Hamas on Israeli civilians were widely condemned. Except for a few countries like Iran, which also distanced itself, most Arab countries were disconcerted and uncomfortable. Israel's right to defend itself was broadly acknowledged. But growing cruelty, continued bombardment, the siege of Gaza and disruption and denial of essential supplies with rampant death and destruction of Palestinians have dented the sympathy for Israel. This was also evident in the statements of Israel’s close friends, including the United States. President Joe Biden dashed for an awkward day-long visit to express his unstinting support to Benjamin Netanyahu with all the moral and material supplies in abundance.

Influence of Sheikhs over Gaza

Like Israeli hardliners, Arab regimes don’t want a democratic Palestinian state. Such a state may well threaten govts defined by the kings-emirs-theocracy formula.

As Israel pounds the Gaza Strip, targeting Hamas after its terror strike against Israel that killed a reported 1,300 people, mostly civilians including children, and the stage is set for mass casualties in Gaza, where do the rights and wrongs of the Israel-Palestine conflict fall?
Some propositions of America’s Declaration of Independence are couched in universal terms that offer a framework to answer that question, one that resonates with Indian foreign policy as well. All peoples are entitled to separate and equal status, and, within a people, everyone is entitled to the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

What Comes Next?: Israel-Hamas War

World woke to the worst horror stories and visuals of an unprecedented and well-coordinated attack by the internationally designated terrorist group Hamas based out of Gaza on Israeli civilians and settlers breaching the hitherto impregnable borders and supposedly impregnable fences of the Israeli defence Forces.
