Legal Perspectives on Violence Against Women in India

An informative and elucidating online panel discussion on “Domestic Violence and Abuse: Challenges and Responses” was an initiative of the Gender Impact Studies Center (GISC), at the IMPRI Impact and Policy Research Institute, New Delhi held on December 19, 2022. The program included an insightful and enriching discussion delivered by eminent speakers, Advocate Gayatri Sharma, Prof Vijaylakshmi Brara, Dr Tara Nair, Adv Celin Thomas, Dr Keerthi Bollineni, and Anchita Ghatak. Prof Vibhuti Patel chaired the session. The session was opened with introductory and welcoming remarks from Professor Vibhuti Patel and was further moderated by her.

The first instance of Feminist Foreign Policy (FFP) was recorded when Dr. Hansa Mehta, as the Indian delegate to the United Nations Human Rights Commission (1947-1948) courageously convinced the world leaders to make amendments to Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights from "All men are born free and equal" to "All human beings are born free and equal".

Towards Inclusivity in Disaster Management: Reflections on Challenges Faced by LGBTQ+ Communities in Disaster Situation

Dr. Lavanya Shanbhogue talked about inclusivity in disaster management, focusing on the challenges faced by queer communities in disaster and conflict situations. Dr. Shanbhogue draws attention to the complicated relationship between queer communities and the state, noting that despite the fact that the state frequently plays a major role in disaster relief efforts, there has historically been discrimination and oppression of queer communities by the state. Her objectives are to highlight the importance of recording the experiences of queer communities in disaster situations and to promote constructive policy changes based on empirical evidence.

Contemporary Legal & Judicial Proceedings & Way Forward

Maya Awasthy talked about Contemporary Legal & Judicial Proceedings & Way Forward surrounding the rights and recognition of India's transgender community. It starts by making a reference to the British colonial era, when transgender people (Hijras) faced discrimination and criminalization. It draws attention to the consequences of the Criminal Tribes Act of 1871, which labelled the Hijras as a criminal tribe.
