On the fifth of August 2022, Ms Supriya Sule, Member of Parliament India of the 17th Lok Sabha, introduced a private members bill titled “The Protection of Rights of Widows and Single Women and Abolishment of Widowhood Practices Bill, 2022”. The Statement of Objects and Reasons of the Bill held that an “ecosystem of neglect leads to millions of widows and single women being pushed into poverty, unable to guarantee a healthy life for themselves and their dependent children” and thus sought to safeguard the rights of widows and single women and to work towards a more equitable, accepting, and progressive society for them.
Day 5 of the “Ending Gender-Based Violence Cohort 2:Awareness of Policies and Governance” focused on the history of the Women Rights Based Movements and Case studies in successful interventions.
The forthcoming elections will be pivotal to ascertain the aspirations of tribal and Dalit women. It remains to be seen whether the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam Bill will translate into tangible progress.
A National Winter School Program on Young Women Leaders in Public Policy Fellowship was organized by Gender Impact Studies Center, IMPRI Impact and Policy Research Institute. The 9th Session of this course was conducted from 6th January to 8th March. The session was convened by Dr. Arjun Kumar, Simmi Mehata, Prof. Gumadi Srideviji, and Adv Dr. Shalu Nigam. The course is conducted by esteemed women pioneers from varied fields with special guidance to emerging young Women Leaders.
