Background
Madhya Pradesh, located in central India, has Bhopal as its capital and is the second-largest state in India by area and the fifth-largest by population, with more than 72 million residents. The state has a diversified economy driven by agriculture, mining, manufacturing, tourism and services. It is one of India’s leading agricultural producers, particularly in pulses, oilseeds and soybean, and has significant mineral resources, including large reserves of diamonds and copper. Madhya Pradesh has a projected GSDP of ₹18.48 lakh crore for 2026–27, representing a nominal growth rate of 11% over the revised 2025-26 estimate(PRS Legislative Research).
The Madhya Pradesh Budget 2026-27, presented by Finance Minister Jagdish Devda on 18 February 2026, has a total outlay of ₹ 4,38,317 crore, with no new taxes imposed. The budget targets a fiscal deficit of 3.9% of GSDP and a revenue surplus of ₹44 crore, while focusing on inclusive growth and development(PRS Legislative Research. Its priorities are structured around the GYANII framework- Garib Kalyan (welfare of the poor), Yuva Shakti (youth empowerment), Annadata (farmers), Nari Shakti (women’s empowerment), and Industry and Infrastructure. Notably, 2026 has been declared Kisan Kalyan Varsh (Farmer Welfare Year), with ₹1,15,013 crore in total financial resources for agriculture and allied sectors, while ₹1,27,555 crore has been allocated to women-centric schemes. The budget also places considerable emphasis on industrial development, infrastructure, employment, skill development and urban development, aiming to strengthen Madhya Pradesh’s position as a growing and investment-oriented state economy.

Conclusion
Madhya Pradesh’s 2026–27 budget reflects a comprehensive development strategy focused on economic growth, social welfare and improved public service delivery. The various departments and schemes demonstrate the government’s emphasis on agriculture, education, healthcare, infrastructure, employment, social security, culture and inclusive development. At the same time, departments responsible for finance, revenue, planning and administration provide the institutional foundation for effective governance and fiscal management. The broad geographical and beneficiary coverage of these initiatives indicates an effort to reach diverse sections of the population. However, achieving the intended outcomes will depend on efficient fund utilisation, timely implementation, transparent monitoring and strong coordination among departments.
