India’s G20 Presidency: Promoting Oneness and Prosperity

India formally took over the baton of the G20 Presidency from Indonesia which started for one year from December 1, 2022. At the time of acceptance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated that “The world is looking at the G-20 with hope. Today, I want to assure that India’s G-20 presidency will be inclusive, ambitious, decisive, and action-oriented. Over the next one year, we will strive to ensure that the G-20 acts as a global prime mover to envision new ideas and accelerate collective action.” This was extremely important and flagged a dismal reality of a transitional global order and severe global challenges implicit in prevailing fragmentation, protectionism, and unilateralism in international discourse.

Strategic Intervention for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT)

The government of India on August 15, 2021, announced the implementation of a project that encourages the use of green hydrogen. The objective of the project is to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and focuses on de-carbonization. For this, a project has been launched with an estimated budget of around ₹19,744 crores that will create a boom in the production of green hydrogen. With the implementation of this project, the country is expected to witness a surge of investments worth Eight lakh crores rupees with the creation of Six lakh jobs and a cumulative reduction in fossil fuels imports worth Rs One lakh crore.

Savings from the switch to Electric Vehicles (EVs) in India

Transport is an integral part of the energy system, and the demand for transport has been ever-increasing with the increase in population. One of the main causes of climate change is greenhouse gas emissions from the usage of fuel in vehicles. A switch to Electric Vehicles (EVs) is a way to minimise such pollution. EVs have been started to reduce carbon emissions due to other advantages such as lower noise pollution, maintenance requirements and power consumption.

Election Commission will now be appointed by a Non-Partisan panel, SC rules out the decision

By directing the Election Commission to be appointed by a non-partisan panel, the Supreme Court (SC) strengthens democracy. But more needs to be done for institutional independence. EC, as well as all other regulatory bodies made autonomous of the executive, should be made answerable to designated committees of Parliament. This is essential to ensure the democratic accountability of all institutions to the ultimate sovereign, the people.
