Women’s Empowerment: From the Lens of  Mahatma Gandhi

Patriarchal societies have often instigated women to remain confined to their families. Under the legal and customary subjection of their husbands or other male family members, it was also prevalent in the pre-independent period. On the contrary, women enjoyed more rights and freedom in the Vedic period compared to medieval and British times. During pre-Gandhian times gender inequality and gender violence were all pervasive. Women were regarded as the root cause of all evil and responsible for the downfall of men.

International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer

The brittle gas shield known as the ozone layer, shields the Earth from the sun's destructive ultraviolet rays, preserving life on the planet. In addition to protecting the ozone layer for current and future generations, the phaseout of controlled uses of ozone depleting substances and the resulting reductions have made a significant contribution to global efforts to combat climate change. By preventing harmful ultraviolet radiation from reaching Earth, these actions have also protected human health and ecosystems. Scientists first noticed a huge hole in the layer in 1985. Two years later, the Montreal Protocol was ratified by 46 nations, who pledged to gradually phase out the dangerous substances.

In recent decades, the emergence of different diseases transmissible from animal to human (Zoonotic disease), such as rabies, Nipah virus, and others, has served as an indicator for us to accelerate efforts and implement the One Health framework.

India and Canada’s Strategic Positions in the Global Chess Game

There is a surreal quality to the whole episode as India-Canada relations hit rock bottom after Canadian Prime Minister (PM) Justin Trudeau linked India to the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a charge that New Delhi termed as “absurd”. This allegation by Trudeau has exposed the fundamental fault line in the bilateral relations between the two nations, resulting in tit for tat diplomatic expulsions, travel advisories being issued by the two, Canada deciding to reduce the number of personnel in its embassy in India and India deciding to suspend issuing of visas to Canadian citizens.
