It is celebrated with different themes in different states of India each time. It commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to Mumbai, India on January 9, 1915. The PBD was first established in 2003, by the late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to engage with the overseas Indian community.
The National Bioenergy Programme is a significant initiative by the Government of India to promote the sustainable use of biomass and other renewable resources for energy production. This program aligns with India's climate goals and supports rural development, waste management, and energy security. Bioenergy, by definition, refers to energy derived from organic materials like agricultural residues, animal waste, and other biodegradable materials. It is considered a clean, renewable source of energy that can help reduce reliance on fossil fuels while addressing environmental concerns.
