Prof. G. Palanithurai, Dean of Students Welfare at Gandhigram Rural Institute – Deemed University in South India, is an accomplished academic activist with 27 years of experience in teaching, research, and outreach programs. Specializing in Grassroots Democracy, Decentralized Governance, and Development Management, he has held various leadership roles within the institute, including Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Chairman of the Interim Administrative Committee in the absence of the Vice-Chancellor. Prof. Palanithurai is a prolific author, having published 70 books, 163 articles in refereed journals, and numerous monographs and popular articles. His expertise extends to designing and introducing innovative M.A. programs in Development Management and Governance and Development, both supported by the University Grants Commission.
Prof. Palanithurai’s impact extends beyond academia; he is actively involved in action research projects, securing over Rs.5.6 crore in funding from various national and international agencies. As Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Council for Sustainable Development, he succeeded Dr. M. S. Swaminathan and has contributed significantly to the devolution of powers in local bodies. Prof. Palanithurai’s commitment to grassroots democracy is evident in his creation of forums like the “Tamil Nadu Campaign for Panchayati Raj” and the establishment of support structures for elected women and Dalit representatives. His extensive engagement with Panchayat leaders, training modules, and leadership school showcase his dedication to transformative leadership and social development.
