National Means cum Merit Scholarship Scheme is a central sector scheme announced by the former Finance Minister, P Chidambaram, in the 2007-08 annual budget. This scheme provides scholarships to economically disadvantaged students to prevent dropouts after class VIII and encourage continued education.
