Natural Disasters: A Consequence of Failed Policies

The govt should enforce policies and regulations which limit the extent of forest land that can be legally converted for non-forest use.

Torrential rain and floods have caused devastation in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi. Natural disasters have become a frequent worldwide phenomenon in recent years. The governments and the people will think that ‘this too shall pass’ and ignore it. But nature won’t relent.

Author Charles Simmons said, “Sickness is the vengeance of nature for the violation of her laws.” The big question is: will governments learn lessons from such disasters and go for course correction? One can attribute the recent floods and landslides to policy failure. Himalayan states have become the hub of tourism, with a sharp rise in personal income and a flourishing demand for recreational activities.

INDIA STRIKES WHITE GOLD

On February 9, 2023, the Geological Survey of India struck gold in the foothills of the Himalayas in the form of 5.9 million tonnes of lithium reserves in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. This discovery comes at a crucial time as the world is moving toward more sustainable energy, and lithium-ion batteries are integral as they power phones, laptops and, most importantly, automobiles.

Deciphering Diplomacy: Prospects for the Indian Ocean’s Future

Recently, I happened to attend the 6th Indian Ocean conference ,2023 in Dhaka which was organized by the India Foundation in collaboration with Ministry of External Affairs of India and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh among others.

COP27 Aims for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation

At this stage, it looks like a great point for discussion at the Conference as the climate diplomats from the developing world express hope of some forward movement and justice to the ‘Loss & Damage’ agenda. But the wealthy economies are apparently covering their backs through the recession and Eurasian war by pumping in more money into buying more dangerous weapon systems. So, the concern is that will there be again a tepid response to a meaningful financial commitment.
