What determines the ardour of the West’s wooing of India? Wherever India’s Prime Minister goes, he is feted, wooed, coddled. What explains this ‘rock star’ treatment?
For the supporters of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the answer is quite simple: his unparalleled charisma and popular support. For those not so adept at such thinking, a more rational explanation is in order. One can be found in the ongoing flux in geopolitics and the desperate search for a new world order, in which the West hopes to retain advantage, even if to a lower degree than it has had in the past.

Onion Prices: A Perennial Problem

In response to the exponential hike in onion prices in the mandis (wholesale fruit and vegetable bazaars) and retail markets, the Union Government reintroduced stock limits on October 23 on traders and wholesalers by invoking a provision of the newly-amended Essential Commodities Act of 1955. Before this, to ease rising prices, the Government had banned export of the bulb and relaxed import norms to increase the stocks available for retail trade.

Mr. Modi entered tenth year of his rule over India as PM on May 26. Nehru passed away 59 years back as PM on May 27. Mr. Modi has been highly critical of Nehru. The BJP highlighted Mr. Modi’s achievements on the occasion while the Congress Party issued a booklet questioning them.

On February 9, 2023, the Geological Survey of India struck gold in the foothills of the Himalayas in the form of 5.9 million tonnes of lithium reserves in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. This discovery comes at a crucial time as the world is moving toward more sustainable energy, and lithium-ion batteries are integral as they power phones, laptops and, most importantly, automobiles.
